Carriage and wagon plates:
Many of the carriage boards below were primarily in the CIE era. According to expert information 'named expresses', as they were known, were first introduced in the 1960's (probably 1964) with the introduction of the new Craven coaches. The Dublin-Cork route had the 'Fáilte' (but possibly it was Dublin-Killarney) and the 'Sláinte'. Dublin-Limerick had the 'Sáirséal' and Dublin-Galway had the 'Cu-na-Mara' (Connemara). Other names were Dublin-Waterford 'Déise' (another name for the city) and Dublin-Cork 'Seandún' (a Cork city church steeple with celebrated bells). It is thought that the initiative came from the General Manager, Jack Higgins and that some of the names came from a newspaper competition.
