History: Summary

Waterford, Dungarvan and Lismore Railway [Incorporated 18/7/1872, opened 12/8/1878]. 48 miles with 53 level crossings. Terminus at Waterford South and, like the WTR, no connection to other railways in the city. Took over the working of the Fermoy and Lismore Railway [27/9/1872] from the GSWR on 1/3/1893. Absorbed, together with Waterford and Wexford Railway [1882], by GSWR [DBMcN: Fishguard and Rosslare R. & H.C. on 12/8/1898] in 1898. Connection made with GSWR at Suir Bridge Junction.

Rolling stock: Initially engines borrowed from DWWR. One 2-4-0ST originally built by Neilson for Cork and Youghal acquired from GSWR in 1883. 6 new Sharp, Stewart 0-4-2 locos: 4 in 1878 Mks.Nos. 2818-21, 1 each in 1891, Mks.No. 3665, and 1892, Mks.No. 3813. Original rolling stock was bought through S.I.Claye of Barrow. Carriage stock was 26 (3 1sts, 3 1st/2nd, 3 2nd, 9 3rd, 3 passenger brakes, 3 horse boxes, 2 carriage trucks). Wagon stock comprised 50 cattle, 30 open, 4 timber, 2 goods brake. The company eventually owned 7 locomotives, 21 passenger vehicles and about 140 wagons. The seven locos were taken into GSWR stock in 1898. Some of the coaches were sold to the CMDR and WTR and the remainder were broken up.
Works:
Livery: According to H.Fayle, engines were red and carried nos. prominently on smokebox doors.
Staff: At opening J.Otway was Engineer and T.O'Malley G.M.. Secretaries were G.Willis 1874-1880, T.O'Malley 1880-1899.
Signalling: In the early 1890s, at the insistence of the Board of Trade, the block system introduced. All but 3 of the 9 ststions were block posts. Two tablets were in use on the Fermoy branch (former F&LR), blue between Lismore and Ballyduff and red between Ballyduff and Fermoy.
